FAQ

Do rats make good pet? : Yes!  They are amazing animals.  They are like no other rodent you will ever meet.  They are clean, smart, love attention, and have good temperaments. Plus they love people and being around them.

Do rats bite? :  No!  They do not bite.  The one reason a rat would bit is if they are truly scared.

What Food and Bedding should I use? :  This information is located on my home page“.

Can I just get one rat? : No! Unless you already have a rat at home.  I HIGHLY suggest getting more than one Rat.  Rats need their own species as well as their human owner to keep them happy.  Rats are so smart and social so they need that companionship. They are a colony animal so they are happier when they can live with a cage mate. (Same sex pairs) (More information about this on my home page)

Do you take in unwanted rats? : No!  I don’t bring in other rats into my rattery often because I try to keep my rats as healthy as possible.

Can Rats Swim? :  Yes, they are in fact great swimmers. It’s okay for your rats to have baths and get clean.  Some rats love to swim and other do not, however if you start a bathing routine they will get used to it.  Rat can swim for quite while without tiring.

What size cage do I need? : Having a large cage is always nice to have, as rats need to have a place to run and exercise.  The minimum cage size is 2 sq. feet per large adult rat.

Do you do stud service? : No. Because stud service requires new rats coming and going, I don’t allow this because of the risk of viruses entering the rattery.

How much does it cost to get rats from you? :  This information is on my “Adoption information / Prices” Page.

Do you ship rats? : No. Sorry.

What is the difference if I buy pet rats from you or go get a couple of rats from the pet store? : This is because I strive for quality and not quantity. Here is a small chart of the different between ratterys and pet stores.

Rattery’s

Pet Store’s

Focus only on rats. Have many pets to worry about.
Comfortable rat cages Small cages so they have room for other animals and merchandise.
Do Proper quarantine, to keep their rats from sicknesses. We are a Closed Rattery People are coming and going daily and so it impossible to keep sickness down.
Keep pedigree records, so they can monitor past health and temperament of each generation. No Pedigrees kept. Or past information given to adopter.
Breeding rats to better the breed and make good PETS. Breeding rats for snake food, or for income purposes.
Proper Socialization. They are hand tamed from the time they are born. Much of the human contact will be done after you adopt these rats. The people that feed them or costumers that play with them will not equal to enough socialization.
Proper weaning time for week old babies. They stay with momma rat until they are 5 weeks old to get proper nutrition so they have a healthy development.  They are weaned to early, and lack the healthy start in life that is needed.  What is best for the rats is not the first on their list.
